April Meeting a Resounding Success,
Despite....
April 21, 2010 by Jack Ott

After it
appeared that last nights Chapter meeting might take place without its Guest
Speaker, things turned out for the best, confirming the old saying
keep the
faith, baby. Approximately two hours prior to the start of the meeting, I was
informed that the scheduled speaker, State Senator JOSH PENRY, had been called away and
would be unable to attend. Fortunately, he had been able to arrange for a very adequate
substitute, Sen. KEVIN LUNDBERG, from Larimer County. As the meeting was about to begin,
it was learned that Sen. LUNDBERG had also asked State Rep. KENT LAMBERT from Colorado
Springs to appear as well, giving us two conservative legislative experts for the price of
one. Together, this dynamic duo informed and entertained the group in the finest and most
complete manner as time allowed, discussing ongoing state legislative activities, as well
as providing insight regarding this years elections. Among the legislative bills
that were discussed were HB 10-1365 (Coordinated
Utility Plan to Reduce Air Emissions), HB 10-1408
(Congressional redistricting), and SR
10-1008 (Sen. SCHULTEIS's failed bill to modify state Senate procedures during the
final three days of the legislative session.
To add frosting
to the cake, MIKE KRAUSE, Director of Operations at the Independence Institute, gave a
presentation on the Institutes new ballot initiative that, if successful, would
constitutionally exempt the people of Colorado from the federal Healthcare Bills
mandatory requirement to purchase health insurance. Several members volunteered to serve
as volunteer circulators, which means actively helping in obtaining the
120,000-plus signatures required to place the initiative on the November ballot.
Most gratifying
was perhaps the largest attendance at a chapter meeting in over a year. It included
several first-time visitors in addition to the meeting regulars. Comments after the
meeting were very favorable from all, and the chances for continued growth and
participation look very promising.
The next chapter
meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Beckman Center.
